Downtown Fresno Open House

There’s an interesting, unique event happening downtown this weekend, a downtown-wide open house.

How does it work? Well, it’s really something that could only work in Fresno. Basically, 5 new residential developments downtown (aka, the majority) will open their doors for viewings. That’s not something that could ever happen in Miami, Boston or LA, but because Fresno has so little housing downtown, something like this can be coordinated.

I’m excited. The open house includes a mixture of places, such as brand new development (Fulton Village), industrial/commercial that has been rehabbed into lofts, and even one of the cities tallest buildings, being converted into residential. That last project, has been ongoing for years, and it’s exciting to finally see something come of it. Click to read more!

Jazzhop growing in popularity

In November, I attended the inaugural Jazzhop event, which was an extension of the existing ArtHop concept. The concept involves opening up studios and galleries downtown to the public, for free. Jazzhop added to the art by introducing local jazz musicians to the scene. These events are held once a month on a Thursday evening.

When I attended in November, I was impressed by the music and scope of the options, but very disappointed in the amount of people. Fortunately, that seems to have changed, and the event held last week was much more popular, even though more venues were added. Part of the credit goes to the Fresno Bee, which produced a large spread in the Sunday issue prior to this month’s event. Click to read more!

New coffee shop choices in Fresno

When it comes to unique coffee shops, Fresno is sorely lacking. There’s a Starbucks on every corner, but if you want something else, then it’s hard to find a good place. Not only are there few to begin with, but many are open for limited hours, such as 6am-2pm.

So what’s one to do when they want somewhere to go for an evening?

Fortunately, there are three new options.

Fresno Brewing Company

While it sounds like a beer place, right now, it’s strictly a coffee and hot chocolate joint.

Opening on December 1st, this new coffee shop brings life to the Fulton Mall. While their target are the many employees in the area, at least for now they offer evening service. Click to read more!

Review and pictures of weekend FUSE Festival

This past weekend was the return of the Fresno Urban Sound Experience, or FUSE fest. This music festival aims to accomplish two goals: Highlight local bands, and bring people to downtown venues.

The festival has been held since 2008, and this year has been the largest. It was also my first time visiting. As $20 bought access to every show over two days, I decided it was well worth a trip.

The organizers clustered venues on the two nights. Friday was the south end of downtown, with Saturday being at the north end.

Note: Map shows Karma which dropped out and was replaced by “The Downtown Club” on the same street.
